Beyonce’s Halftime Show Causes Scandal

Queen Bey isn’t just a star but a political activist.  Super Bowl? More like #BeyonceBowl.

In the recent Super Bowl halftime performance, Beyonce’s dancers, including herself, wore costumes that received a lot of attention. Supposedly, they were reminiscent of the Black Lives Matter movement and payed homage to the Black Panthers.

The costumes were designed by Zana Bayne, who said, “We love Beyoncé and wanted to create something where she resembles a warrior leading her female posse who fall into formation.” Her latest song “Formation,” which she performed in the Super Bowl, mourns the lives that have been lost due to racism by white supremacists.

Some criticized the performance, feeling that the statement was dramatic and not necessary.

One person particularly found the performance to be unappealing.  Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, in a Fox News interview said, “This is football, not Hollywood. I thought it was really outrageous that she used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive.”

However, many fans of Beyonce and Super Bowl viewers were excited about the representation of people of color in the media, and Beyonce’s use of her fame to promote a message.  “Formation” is still #1 on charts this week due to her performance that brought a lot of attention.

Beyonce added on her interview on CBS, “I wanted it to be something iconic and something that people would never forget… It’s always important for me to be a strong woman. There haven’t been that many women that have done Super Bowl halftime shows. I had to hold it down for the ladies.”
