The Eagles have moved to 5-1 after a great win against Lakeville North. Great performances from the starters and the bench helped vault the team to a 67-60 win at home.
This is just one win in a string of great wins for this year’s girls basketball team. The team has already earned great wins against defending state champion Minnetonka and state-ranked #4 St. Michael-Albertville. The Eagles have positioned themselves in the state top-10 rankings, and early on it’s evident that this team has the potential to be great this year.
“I think it’s a little early to think about rankings and how well we’re doing,” said coach Jeremy Gordon. “I think we have the potential to be great, but we have to keep working because there’s a lot of the season left.”
The Eagles got off to a hot start in the game. A combination of excellent defense and three-point shooting helped get the team to a 39-24 lead at the half.
Lakeville North started to close down on the Eagles at the beginning of the second half. An 8-0 run helped North get back into the game and keep it tight. Senior captain Lyndsey Robson provided a huge spark for her team, though. She was able to set her teammates up for some easy looks and was hitting from beyond the arc with consistency.
The bench also provided some steady scoring and great defense down the stretch. This game was a showcase for how deep the Eagles are on the bench and how, if a starter is having an off night, they can go into their bench to get some help.
“The play from the bench really makes a big difference because it takes pressure off of the starters and if other players are scoring, it makes an individual feel like they don’t need to do as much,” said Robson.
Robson led the way with 23 points. Fellow captains Sara Teske and Erin Baxter also helped carry the load offensively, with Teske scoring 19 points and Baxter with 12.
The girls will look to defend their home court again on Thursday against East Ridge at 7 pm. Come out and support!
